13.00–14.00 — Will the use of CO2 help to save the planet?

Will the use of CO2 help to save the planet?

There are in some areas we can and have to decrease emissions, but at least today there are still vast non-avoidable amounts produced, which demolish our atmosphere and climate. Should the circular mindset in the economy be extended to CO2 emissions and could those even be treated as raw material? One unique project of producing calcium carbonate for paints, flooring, or window frames from energy production ashes by using CO2 is proving, that almost everything is possible.

We should not limit the options around residue, waste, or emissions with yes or no instead we should be in search of new solutions beyond. Estonia is the stage, where a project was born with an international collaboration of scientists, organizations, and companies. The country has a compelling and inspiring story to tell, how to make a 180 degrees turnaround in the challenging energy sector and linear economy. In addition, these 600 million tons of oil shale ash hills and hundreds of millions of tons of CO2 if treated as raw materials will decrease the demand for virgin material mining somewhere else. Is this one of several ways, we should use to take our civilization out of the climate crisis?

08:00-08:10 - The Glasgow COPpuccinos at The Resilience Hub - Episode 2

Resilience Hub: Sheela Patel describes to Peter Willis the incongruous history of urban growth and development in the global south, pointing out the impossibility of aligning the consumption-driven ‘modernity model’ and the more protective ‘sustainability model’. Within the COP negotiations, she believes cities are still too marginal, despite cities being the major point of engagement between people and resources.

She finds extraordinary capacity for resilience amongst the slum communities, but in the absence of even basic necessities. Now is the time for forming a chain of solidarity. This is a global venture that needs to be done locally.

13:30–15:00 — From Kunming to Glasgow: Uniting Global Businesses to Tackle Nature Loss

From Kunming to Glasgow: Uniting Global Businesses to Tackle Nature Loss

Climate change and the continued loss of biodiversity represents a major risk to economic growth and sustainable livelihoods. Mainstreaming biodiversity into businesses, alongside delivering net zero for climate is not only critical for the planet, but also fundamental for business success as we build back better and create new opportunities. Biodiversity and climate are inextricable linked, and collective action by businesses, governments and civil society is needed for nature and climate.

Our objective is to bring Kunming to Glasgow – through international business participation and engagement at the UN Biodiversity Conference we will bring the key elements to the COP26. We will highlight the practical solutions businesses are taking to unite against biodiversity loss – this is in recognition that while COP26 is focused primarily on stimulating international action on climate, this itself cannot be achieved without also addressing biodiversity loss and the need for nature-based solutions. To make the necessary transformative changes, we need to drive the discussions forward, from international policy and the post-2020 global biodiversity framework to practical implementation and solutions for businesses.

08:00-08:10 - The Glasgow COPpuccinos at The Resilience Hub - Episode 4

Resilience Hub:

Wanjira Mathai detects levels of ‘smoke and mirrors’ in the way adaptation finance is being negotiated and calculated, which echoes the low degrees of trust between South and North. She highlights the importance for the negotiations of acknowledging the climate ‘loss and damage’ that is already locked into the climate system and which will be picked up by the global South. It is, she says, an issue not only of solidarity but also of the entanglement of African minerals and products (coffee for our COPpuccinos, for example) in global supply chains.

She believes the best indicator that someone is genuinely switched on to resilience is that they are losing sleep over the very low levels of climate finance for adaptation in the global South.

11:00–12:30 — ICC Carbon Pricing Principles

ICC Carbon Pricing Principles – Bringing clarity and coherence to carbon pricing globally and making the case for a successful agreement on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement

In the absence of an agreement on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on international carbon markets, many countries are moving ahead fast and develop carbon pricing instruments and businesses/sectors also use a shadow carbon price in their models. Over 60 carbon pricing schemes, including carbon taxes, have been implemented at national level whilst others are still being developed, which has created a fragmented international climate policy landscape, compounded by administrative complexity.

Yet a stronger and more coordinated approach to carbon pricing is critical if we are to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. Governments also lack specific guidance on the design of carbon pricing policies that support the real economy and incentivize enhanced climate action and ambition. This event aims to bring together experts involved in developing the ICC Carbon Pricing Principals as well as key stakeholders from the public sector for an in-depth exchange on the challenges and prospects for carbon pricing globally, considering ICC’s 10 clear steps for developing and implementing effective carbon pricing.

08:00-09:30 — Circular Economy – Good for Climate, Good for Business

Nordic COP26 Hub in Helsinki: Circular Economy – Good for Climate, Good for Business - Circular Economy from strategy to implementation: the future working business models and ecosystems – examples from the Nordics

Circular Economy – Good for Climate, Good for Business

Our overuse of natural resources drives increased regulatory pressure, investments are shifting towards responsible businesses and new consumption patterns are needed. Sustainability and circularity are the two key factors for our society in the transition towards carbon neutrality, minimizing the negative impact on the environment. Locally, regionally and globally.

We invite to a discussion on the green transition and how to employ circular business models. We seek to further explore how circular economy can be moved from strategy to business, and how one by supporting new ecosystems and piloting new circular economy solutions can contribute to improving circularity in business and organizations to support the green shift. The green transition has already begun within Nordic companies, but how do we ensure a continuous focus on the circular approach?

14:00-15:00 — Will the use of CO2 help to save the planet?

Welcome to this special broadcast, pre-recorded in Estonia in the run-up to COP26.

It is an inspiring story on how 600 million tons of oil shale ash hills and hundreds of millions of tons of CO2 can be used as raw materials, thereby decreasing the demand for virgin material mining somewhere else.

The unique project was born in Estonia, through an international collaboration of scientists, organizations, and companies. It is a story on how to make a 180 degrees turnaround in the challenging energy sector and linear economy, by developing a method to use CO2 to produce calcium carbonate for paints, flooring, or window frames.

Is this one of several ways, we should use to take our civilization out of the climate crisis?

08:00-08:10 - The Glasgow COPpuccinos at The Resilience Hub - Episode 7

Resilience Hub:

With her unusual perspective from within local government, Debra identifies what she sees as critical ingredients of a more resilient future for African cities. They include knowledge exchange between science, local government practice and community sources; a more roundtable approach to government, distributing the power; and embracing the reality of urban informality, where many people are already ‘walking the future’ in terms of the levels of uncertainty and precarity they confront and the ingenuity they have to manifest to survive.

She sees social safety nets would and ground-level access to power and decision-making as important steps towards helping them build resilience. All of this change requires enormous courage from those who would lead.

Speakers:

  • Dr Debra Roberts, Head of Sustainable and Resilient Initiatives, eThekwini Municipality, Durban, South Africa & Co-Chair of IPCC Working Group 2

10:00–11:00 — Spurring Sustainable Trade: How Trade Facilitation can Help Cut Carbon Emissions?

Spurring Sustainable Trade: How Trade Facilitation can Help Cut Carbon Emissions?

The aim of this session is to initiate discussion on the link between trade facilitation and climate change. As international trade volumes have increased and supply chains have become more complex, trade has become central to all global conversations. While the economic benefits associated with trade facilitation are well documented, the possible environmental impacts are only starting to be explored. For instance, a recent paper found that efficiency gains from replacing paper-based trade processes with digital ones in Asia and the Pacific can lead to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Correlations have also been observed between improved port processes and a reduction in CO2 emissions, with several ports investing in initiatives to actively reduce their environmental footprint. Being at the forefront of trade facilitation trends, the Global Alliance for Trade Facilitation is eager to deepen the discussion on the environmental benefits associated with improved trade processes and capture these in the measurement of the wider impact of its projects. This session will bring together key public and private stakeholders to discuss the role that trade facilitation is playing in the fight against climate change.

14:00-15:15 — Catalysing the last mile of climate finance

Exploring case studies from India to West Africa where satellite data and AI is enabling last mile of climate finance.

Voluntary carbon markets can meet one third of the 45% emissions reductions required by 2030 through rapidly scaling natural climate solutions that also protect and promote livelihoods, yet they are a small $300m market struggling to finance its growth.  The lack of transparent, deep tech, data-driven approaches in measuring carbon and continuously confirming the existence of the underlying carbon assets through auditing, means many forest protection projects over the last decade have failed to preserve and protect forest (e.g. 90% coverage reduced to 46% and even 0% within 20 years). In this event, Earthbanc will showcase how its deploying its technology for incentivizing small holder farmers in Meghalaya and Sunderbans India.

How does their voice find its way up the chain to the sources of finance? 13:30-14:15 — Youth advancing lighter and better living

Nordic COP26 Hub in Helsinki: Youth advancing lighter and better living

Youth advancing lighter and better living

Citizens as consumers have a profound effect on how we shape society. The daily choices we make and how we design our lives are directly linked to how we use resources and impact ecosystems across the globe. Consumption is the main driver of economic growth while increasing consumption is also the main cause of global challenges we face today.

To reduce consumption's negative climate and environmental impact, we must change how and what we consume. But how do we get there? How can consumption be made more sustainable? What can be done to make it easier for consumers to make climate-smart choices? What is the role of young people as agents of change?
