Energy Efficiency in Cities

Learning Lab – Episode 2, Season 1 With Mayor Katja Dörner, Bonn, Germany

Hi, my name is Katja Dörner, and I am the mayor of the German city of Bonn.

We have a very ambitious goal for our city, and that is to be climate-neutral by 2035. That is a challenge, as most of our buildings were built before energy efficiency measures in Germany. For us, the major issue is heating, and we have a support program for homeowners to improve the energy efficiency of their heating systems. Our Energy Agency is very good at advising people how to renovate; however, there is a mistrust of heat pumps not being efficient, and that we need to change.

Questions for reflection:

What are your blockers to change in implementing energy efficiency in your city? Do you also have a mistrust of new solutions?

Or is it more of a financial problem? What can you do to overcome them?
