11:30–12:00 CEST — Sustainable manufacturing — Why climate-smart choices begin with the right configurator

Sustainable Industry – Why sustainable choices begin with the right configurator

Our lives are surrounded by products and landscapes that have been shaped by human ingenuity and enabled by industry. The Manufacturing Industry is responsible for approximately 20% of the global climate impact from human activities. Reducing and eliminating the negative climate impacts of manufacturers has to do with making smart choices and being aware of more sustainable alternatives. What if manufacturers could offer buyers more obvious choices where the decisions could be optimized for environment and social impact rather than just price and availability? Manufacturers have been at the forefront of creating sustainable products, materials and equipment, but how can they get buyers to make more sustainable choices?

Join us for this Climate Initiative session where we will discuss how ensuring more sustainable products are sold really starts with having the right configurator that can nudge buyers to make sustainable choices.

  • Bo Gyldenvang, CEO at Tacton

  • Madeleine Bergrahm, Tacton

12:00–13:00 CEST — UNDP Hour – The right to a healthy environment: From resolution to reality

In 2021, for the first time ever, the United Nations Human Rights Council passed a resolution recognizing that access to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment is a human right.

The air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink; our health, wellbeing and survival all depend on a clean, healthy and sustainable environment. The new resolution underscores the right to participate in decision-making processes, to have access to information and the ability to seek and secure effective remedies. In this spirit, UNDP has hosted country consultations with citizens in over 50 countries ahead of Stockholm+50.

What does this new resolution mean for people and planet? What is needed for this right to be effectively executed? And will the country consultations contribute to a more equitable form of decision-making during Stockholm+50?

Speakers:

  • David R. Boyd, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment
  • Archana Soreng, Environmental Activist and member from the Secretary General’s Youth Advisory Group on Climate
  • Gustavo Manrique, Minister of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition

12:00–13:00 CEST — UNDP Hour – The footprint of Stockholm+50: What brought us here and what could the conference bring?

Since the first international conference on human environment in Stockholm in 1972, we have seen five decades of increasing planetary concerns, but also achievements, from the Rio Declaration to the Paris Agreement.

Whilst the status of our environment has deteriorated into what is now referred to as a triple planetary crisis of climate, biodiversity loss and pollution, the character of the international dialogue has also changed. The tone has sharpened to the point where the very survival of humanity is in question.

Against the historical backdrop of deterioration of the natural habitat, and the successes and set-backs of previous climate conferences this session asks: What are countries and the UN system doing now to speed up progress? And what can we – realistically – expect from Stockholm+50?

12:00–13:00 CEST — UNDP Hour – The unequal impact of climate change

Scientists have long sounded the alarm that climate change will disproportionately affect the most vulnerable, including women, children, ethnic minorities, poor communities and migrants. The effects of climate change could push 130 million people into poverty within the next ten years, widening the economic inequality, both within and between countries.

As the gap between rich and poor is likely to deepen as climate disruptions continue, so are the opportunities for new generations to enjoy a healthy planet where they can live and prosper. A child born today in the Global North is twice as likely to experience extreme weather conditions than its grandparents, whilst a child in the Global South is three times more likely to experience extreme weather conditions than its grandparents.

This session seeks to improve our understanding of the complex layers of climate inequality and the solutions that are being put in place for a just and sustainable future for all.

17:30–18:30 CEST — Let the gap be your map– Circularity to reach climate goals

Let the gap be your mind – Circularity to reach climate goals

For the first time, an analysis has been made of how circular Sweden’s economy is. The Circularity Gap Report Sweden is an in-depth analysis of how Sweden consumes materials, from food and consumer goods to housing and mobility. How can we learn from that report and let the gap be our guidance on how to live and do business within the planetary boundaries? Listen to good examples from food and building sector and we will do a deep dive into the textile sector and listen to stakeholders from different parts of the value chain.

In the second part of the hour, we will drill down into the issue of circularity within fashion. Fashion is currently one of the most wasteful and least circular industries in the world, with an estimate of less than 1% of clothes being recycled back into clothes at the end of use. You will hear from industry experts looking to deal with the massive impact that fashion has on climate and the environment by making fashion circular.

10:30–11:00 CEST — From academia to advocacy: technology as a change-maker

Researchers around the globe are increasing our understanding of how to act on the climate emergency. The latest IPCC report has made clear the fact that the world already possesses all the knowledge and technology in order to limit temperature increases to 1.5°C. But much of that knowledge and technology fails to be put in practice to accelerate climate action.

This session will highlight two examples in which presently available technology democratizes climate knowledge and simplifies decision-making, thereby increasing local governments’ ability to drive science-based change.

Join our leading experts who share their insights on using Carbon Budgets in public awareness digital campaigns (The Climate Checker) and Systems Thinking (ClimateOS platform) to better plan, engage in and execute on the Paris Agreement.

11:30–12:00 CEST — Transport in the Race to Zero

This session is a check in with Volvo Cars and Volvo Group in their race to zero. In conversation we will highlight their current actions and achievements in creating ever-more sustainable transport of goods and people. We will also touch on the challenges they face, as well as their goals for 2030.

At the time of the first UN Environment Conference in Stockholm in 1972, the CEO of Volvo articulated the necessity for business to see itself both as part of the problem and part of the solution. Since then, Volvo has been divided into two companies – Volvo Cars for cars and Volvo Group for trucks, buses, construction equipment and marine solutions. Since 1972, both companies have constantly innovated to reduce their impact on the environment. We will look into how far they have come, and what they are doing now as they work towards total value chain carbon neutrality by 2040. Volvo Cars and Volvo Group have high ambitions, and are both driving their respective industries forward.

Climate change impacts everyone, but the future belongs to young people. As the grip of climate change tightens, young people are leading efforts to change the future by demanding climate action from their governments.

The demands from young people get louder and youth-led action on climate change is growing strong across the globe. Whether through education, activism, innovation, science or technology, young people are scaling up their efforts and using their skills to accelerate climate action.

So, from a youth perspective: What are the main outcomes of Stockholm+50? How do we move forward? And how can we ensure that the voices of young people are heard and acted upon?

Speakers:

  • Matilda Ernkrans, Sweden’s Minister for International Development Cooperation

12:00–13:00 CEST — UNDP Hour – The growing field of climate innovation: What will the future bring?

The need for transformative and collaborative innovation to drive the world towards net zero greenhouse gas emissions is more important than ever. The good news is that an increasing number of creative minds, innovators, investors, and companies are getting involved in climate innovation, and the commitment appears to grow with the increasing concern for our planet.

Thousands of companies have made public commitments to net zero emissions and new types of funding mechanisms have emerged. Organizations and leaders, on both international and national level, are pursuing net zero pathways and increasing investments in green jobs, adaptation, just transition, climate finance, circular economy and more.

What solutions are currently being implemented and what impact can we realistically expect from the growing field of climate innovation?

Climate change impacts everyone, but the future belongs to young people. As the grip of climate change tightens, young people are leading efforts to change the future by demanding climate action from their governments.

The demands from young people get louder and youth-led action on climate change is growing strong across the globe. Whether through education, activism, innovation, science or technology, young people are scaling up their efforts and using their skills to accelerate climate action.

So, from a youth perspective: What are the main outcomes of Stockholm+50? How do we move forward? And how can we ensure that the voices of young people are heard and acted upon?
